Bishop Morley of Winchester 1598-1684: Politician Benefactor Pragmatist by Andrew Thomson

Detailed Description

This book attempts to offer an authoritative account of the life and achievements of George Morley. Morley was for years a teacher at Christ Church, Oxford, subsequently Dean of the College, then Bishop of Worcester and, finally, Bishop of Winchester. These appointments would, in themselves, have made him an important figure in the history of seventeenth-century England; but Morley in fact played a huge part, far beyond the confines of the University of Oxford and the Dioceses of Worcester and Winchester, nationally, in the political and religious developments of his time. He played key roles in the restoration of the king in 1660 and in the subsequent attempts to achieve a settlement – the beginnings of the search for church unity – in the 1660s and 1670s
