More InformationThis event offers an introductory overview of David Tollerton’s 2026 book Remembering and Forgetting Britain’s COVID-19 Pandemic. Focused on the stories surrounding physical memorial sites created since 2020, the talk will outline some of socio-political tensions arising from public and political memory of the pandemic, as well as the diversity of forms that memorials have taken. Of particular interest to anyone concerned with 21st century British history or the complexities of memory studies, it will be proposed that to make sense of these memorials involves as much consideration of forgetting as remembering. David Tollerton is Associate Professor in Memory Studies at the University of Exeter. Alongside his work on pandemic memory, he also researches debates in Holocaust memory. In 2020, his book Holocaust Memory and Britain’s Religious-Secular Landscape was published by Routledge, and he is co-editor of the forthcoming edited volume The Holocaust and Ecocide in Culture and Public Debate: From Past Atrocity to Planetary Threat. He is the academic advisor to the Department for Culture, Media, and Sport’s COVID-19 Pandemic Commemoration Stakeholder Advisory Group.
